There is an area in the middle of the retina of the eye called the macula. It is also called the macula, and many people suffer from macular degeneration (AMD), which is the most common cause of impaired vision in older people.

About the AREDS studies:

The first AREDS study ran for five years and was run by researchers at the National Eye Institute in the United States.
